Voting and other matters

One good thing about our delayed departure is that we have been able to exercise our democratic rights!! We paid a visit to the NZ Consulate and were the first to vote today in Noumea which is the first day for special votes for Godzone's elections. We were very pleased that circumstances have conspired to allow us to have an influence on the outcome - however slight. Everyone has their own political opinions of course but it seems to us that the present incumbents are hellbent on selling NZ's productive assets to offshore interests - we've even got an ex Prime Minister on the board of a major Chinese bank doing her damndest to broker such deals. This is nothing short of economic treason and should be treated as such. You can probably gather from this where our sympathies lie; we are looking forward to having a certain Right Honourable gentleman back in Parliament from where he can keep the corridors of power reasonably honest - baubles of office or not. They're all after those in any case without exception. Nil illegitimae carborundum - or freely translated from the Latin: Don't let the bastards grind you down!! 'Nuff said about all that!!
Things are looking reasonably good for a Friday departure - one thing we have come to realise from an intensive study of the weather over several weeks and after talking to some knowledgeable individuals it does appear that the SE wind patterns are strongest near the coast because of the orientation of the island with its mountainous interior which funnels the prevailing SE at higher velocity. Therefore off the coast the wind will probably be less and more steady. Sounds a good theory; we'll let you know if it's true when we get to Bundaberg! At least the wind is with us and likely to remain so for some time so can't all be bad. Certainly better than the passage up from NZ. Here's hoping.............
