Do We Really Need the Federal Reserve?
By Keith Fitz-Gerald, Chief Investment Strategist

Last week I spent two days speaking to senior government officials and business leaders in Bermuda, which is one of the world's leading international insurance and reinsurance hubs. The men and women in the room are responsible for hundreds of millions in assets worldwide.

As I was finishing up, I received one of the most provocative questions I've gotten in a long time: "Does any nation really need a 'Fed,'" asked one of the directors?

Here is my unequivocal answer...

(no subject)

Hi again,
Some previously embargoed news: Jean is going to be a Grandmother for the first time!! Still got a way to go to catch up with Jim. She is beside herself with excitement and it's just as well we have a major re-provisioning exercise to go through which is keeping her somewhat "grounded"!! Not to mention the antifouling coming up. Don't worry, Tracie; no pressure, Jean is in a world of her own - what's new?!!! Still, your news has given her much joy. As an aside, she does realise that Perry has had something to do with it! By the way, the whole marina here knows; she had to tell someone otherwise she'd have exploded very messily!
The happy event is scheduled for somewhere around the end of September/early October and there was a scan earlier this week which indicated that there were no problems.
At that time we should be at Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) so the crew will really be chafing at the bit then! Might have to lock her in the brig until we put to sea again for Johore Bahru, south Peninsula Malaysia - just north of Singapore. We should arrive there later in October so it will be possible to fly back to NZ, although we still have to decide whether we stay there for a month or two or carry on up to Langkawi Is. on the NW coast of Malaysia before flying home. No doubt there will be much spirited discussion on the subject as we progress north.
At the moment the boat looks like a grocery store that's been through an earthquake!! And we've only started. Provisioning for 2 months is quite an exercise, particularly as much of it has to be non refrigerated. But it's just a matter of working through things methodically. Also getting one or two paper charts which we are missing and another cruising guide to the Northern Territory. Very tricky area up there as there are very big tides with tidal streams in some places up to 8 knots. There is a narrow channel through the middle of the Wessel Islands on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria called "The Hole in the Wall" where the tidal streams are even more fierce. We won't be going through there. Also around Cape York one needs to be very conscious of the tidal currents which seem to be exacerbated by the fact that that is where the Arafura and Coral Seas meet. Before going anywhere up there it is necessary to organise things so that one goes with the flow! It all takes quite a bit of advance passage planning which necessarily takes more time - still all this keeps us out of the pub and off the streets.
Anyway, that's it for now. No doubt more baby news as time goes on.
Lotsaluv from us
Jean and Jim

Tiare Taporo III getting ready for the journey north

Things are very uncertain here because we are looking at Cyclone "Tim" which headed out into the Coral Sea a few days ago and now according to most predictions will come back onto the coast anywhere between Townsville and Cooktown. In Cairns we are right in the middle of that geographical spectrum!
"Tim" isn't supposed to generate destructive winds but almost certainly will contain substantial rain which will cause us a problem as we intend to haul out for antifouling on 21/03. You can't paint in the rain and at around $A100 per day for the hardstand we don't fancy existing on the hard twiddling our thumbs for days on end. So, we are keeping a close eye on developments and watching 4 different weather websites to try to come to some sort of conclusion. Information overload probably.
If we don't haul out on the 21st. we will carry on with provisioning for the 2 month passage to Darwin and haul out before we leave in late April. So, the time will not be wasted.
On the provisioning front we have discovered a range of preserved meals from an Australian suppler, "Happy Camper". They aren't dried or freeze dried but rather preserved, just the same as UHT milk. There are lamb shanks and all sorts of other delicacies! We can't carry sufficient frozen or canned supplies for that length of time so the UHT products will fill a gap. And we might catch some fish.
After leaving Cairns we will have 1400 miles to travel to Darwin. The only convenient place to re-provision would be Seisia (Bamaga) on the west side of the Cape York Peninsula. But we'd only want to replenish the basics and maybe the luxury of some fresh fruit and veges because by all accounts the prices aren't what you'd expect in your neighbourhood Coles or Woolworths. And getting ashore in a 2.2. metre rubber dinghy with a little 2 hp outboard in croc country is not for the fainthearted. However, they say that crocs are very habitual and will watch you for several days before making a move. So, you don't do the same thing at the same time every day. Not sure whether that's re-assuring or not - time will tell!!! Hopefully we'll be gone from Seisia within a couple of days - far too soon for the crocs to have formed any pattern of our behaviour.
After Seisia it's 300 miles across the top of the Gulf of Carpentaria to the Wessel Islands and then Arnhem Land. We will coast hop anchoring every night to experience as much as possible. We are looking forward to it and it will be an adventure, even before we leave for Malaysia. We have the passage plan more or less sussed out on the chart plotter, but like all these things they are subject to change. Arrival in Darwin will be interesting because, as a result of the tidal range (up to 7 meters between low and high water), the marinas have a lock system which you can only access at high tide. They then close the lock again to maintain the water level inside as the tide drops away.
Anyway, all this will be regaled in great and fascinating detail as we progress north. On that note, because of lack of internet access until we reach Darwin, we will just be sending progress reports to our website, www.tiaretaporo3.blogspot.com and if you have the inclination you will be able to learn of our progress from there. You will of course be able to email us on this address.
We won't be leaving Cairns until late April when hopefully the last of the cyclone threat will have passed.
Until then watch this space................
Lots of love from us,
Jim and Jean (Gina)

RE: Tiare Taporo III (NZ Registration NZ 1572)

Good afternoon Jim & Jean,

Thank you for your enquiry. It’s great to hear you’ll be up in the Top End prior to taking part in the rally.

In regards to your questions, I’ll answer them the best I can at this stage:

1.      Your vessel would comfortably fit into one of our 15m or 17m berths. However, as you can understand these are the most sought after size berths. At this stage we do not any showing as available during your stay here, however, this can change quickly. In regards to booking a berth, we are very busy in the ‘dry season’ (May-Sep) due to this our policy is that we do not take booking more than 2-3 weeks out from arrival. This said – I’m more than happy to put you on a wait list so when the first berth (either 15m or 17m) becomes available, I will contact you to let you know.

The current rates are as follows:

15m berth - $228 per week (for a 1 month stay)

17m berth - $258 per week (for a 1 month stay)

Lock opening permit fee:

$270 (this permit is valid for 12 months should you wish to re-enter the Marina)

2.      To book a berth we would send you thought a booking form, lock opening permit, statutory declaration and power agreement form. These will need to be completed and sent back to us prior to entry into the marina along with pre-payment and a copy of your vessel insurance (insurance must have a minimum 10 million liability)

3.      You will need to contact the Northern Territory Government – Fisheries Department on 0413 381 094. As they will require a copy of your antifouling confirmation. Once this is done Fisheries will give us the all clear to allow entry.

4.      In entering our marina, the Lock Masters opens the lock on the hour every hour. We have 24 hour access. We do require that you give us at least 1 hours’ notice prior to arrival. You can contact our lock master on Channel 11, or via mobile 0419 421 363.

5.      Cullen Bay Marina is located 2.7km from Darwin City (approx. 5-7 mins drive)

I hope this information is helpful at this stage. Please contact us closer to your departure date and we can see what we have available for yo.

Kind Regards,

Gemma Carroll

Hi,

We are a NZ registered monohull yacht. Length OA 41" (13.45M) Beam 10' (3.28M) Draft 6'3" (2.05M). We are currently in Cairns and will be leaving here towards the end of April for Darwin where we expect to arrive near the end of June. We are taking part in the 2013 Sail Indonesia Rally leaving Darwin on July 27th.

We would like to obtain a marina berth for our stay in Darwin during which time we would be living aboard.

To that end could you please advise the following:

1) Your berthage rates and all relevant charges that would apply to our vessel.

2) How we would go about reserving a confirmed berth. We do have email capacity at sea (ZMQ5985@sailmail.com)

3) We are aware of the restrictions regarding preventing importation of marine pests. We are hauling out in Cairns for antifouling and will be re-launched on March 28th. which is 3 months from our expected arrival in Darwin. We could obtain written confirmation of our antifouling from the Cairns boatyard if necessary. Is there any other documentation which might be required? Or inspections?

4) We understand that we would approach the marina entrance as close to HW as practicable. Is it then a matter of contacting the Lockmaster on VHF or by cellphone?

5) Please advise your approximate distance from the Darwin CBD - say the Australian Customs Office.

Your early attention to these queries would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Jim Donald and Jean Tallentire

Ready for hauling out 21/03

Among other things we want to do when we haul out is the fitting of a bronze water strainer over our engine water intake. We managed to find a suitable strainer fitting in Cairns but, would you believe it, they had no bronze screws and said they couldn't obtain any. Suggested ss screws for a timber hull below the waterline! No, no, no!! So, we managed to find a classic yacht supplier down south who has sent us 6 screws absolutely gratis.
He is Mike Watson (a fellow Kiwi) and his business website is http://www.classic-boat-supplies.com.au/ Great service.
We have also found a shipwright who can do the job, but won't be as good as Noel!! And no red lead available in Oz. Such a backward country!! We will build up under the fitting with a local Queensland hardwood (Ash) to achieve a flat surface and then mount the strainer. Will have to make do with underwater primer. We feel the need to do this because of the level of polution in SE Asia - plastic bags etc etc.
That's all for now
Cheers from us...........
