Subject: Save our Farms Campaign

Foreign buyers are lining up from all countries to purchase our land. In the last five years New Zealand, through the Overseas Investment Office has approved the sale of 150,000 hectares of agricultural land to foreign owners.
We believe the Government must take urgent steps to address foreign ownership of our lands. The first step to place a moratorium on the sale of Crafar farm and other sensitive agricultural land to foreign ownership until there has been informed public debate and suitable protections incorporated into a review of the Overseas Investment Act 2005. New Zealand must retain ownership of our primary resource, the land and waters of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Foreign investment can bring positive economic benefits to New Zealand and there are a number of examples, equally there are examples where those benefits quickly move off-shore. Much of our prime wine growing areas are now in foreign ownership. Can we afford to sit back and let this happen to our large farms and the communities they support?
The culture of New Zealand is one of partnership with the land and the waters of Aotearoa. As partners we ask for the chance to be heard and the opportunity to best protect our land for future generations.

Fw: Tiare Taporo III

Hi to everyone,
The time for our departure is getting ever closer - just a few more things to tidy up and then we'll be sailing. If the weather lets us. Just looked on the weather map now and a promising high is rapidly being squeezed north between all the unsettled weather over us right now and a further nasty looking lot approaching from the West Island! Still, there have been satisfactory weather windows in the past so hopefully one will turn up when we are ready to go which should be very soon now. We are continuing to tweak things as necessary with re-provisioning and adding things as they occur to us. We should be the most well prepared boat ever to leave NZ when we finally go!!
We are thinking now that with the reduced amount of time before we need to return again in November, we will only go to New Caledonia this year. It will be a useful shakedown cruise for us and give us some good insights into the cruising life for when we embark on longer passages.
Seeing as we are still here, we will take the opportunity this weekend to attend the 96th. birthday of Jean's Aunt Kitty who lives just north of Auckland. It will be something of a family reunion and for Jim a chance to meet some more of the family.
We have become somewhat enamoured of an Irish comedian, Hal Roach, and have acquired 3 of his CD's. His monologues are hilarious and, although we can't reproduce his Irish accent, we have sent some of them to the Whangarei Marina office because they print jokes from time to time and put them on the insides of the toilet doors - hence the reference to a "captive audience". We thought you might enjoy them too.
We'll email you when departure is imminent.
Hope everyone is well and life is treating you well.
With regards and lots of love,
Jim and Jean (Gina)

Hi Sharon,
Thought you might like some of our Irish jokes for your captive audiences!
Murphy was in London and travelling on the underground in the early hours of the morning. He disembarked from the train and was walking towards the escalator when he noticed a sign that said, "dogs must be carried on the escalator at all times". He said, "my God, where am I going to find a dog at this hour of the night?"!!
Murphy saw a man from Galway and asked whether it was true that men from Galway always answered a question with another question. He said, "who told yer that?"
2 nuns went grocery shopping in a red Mini. They couldn't find a park so one said to the other, "I'll go in and get the groceries and you drive around until I come out". When she came out she couldn't find the car so she asked a man nearby whether he'd seen a nun in a red Mini. He said, "not since I took the pledge!"
Murphy rang Irish Airlines and asked how long it took to fly from Shannon to New York. The girl who answered the phone said, "just a minute". He put the phone down and said that was wonderful.
Murphy and Casey were riding a motorcycle. Murphy was riding pillion and yelled to stop the bike because he was cold. So Casey told him to turn his coat around and button it down the back. They set off again and then Casey was horrified to see that after a time Murphy wasn't there. So he turned the bike around and saw Murphy on the road surrounded by 6 people. He said, "is he OK?" They said he had been but ever since they turned his head around to face the same as the buttons on the coat he hadn't been speaking!
There were 25 people waiting for a bus. Murphy said, "if we all get on the bus about half of us will be left behind".
Murphy kept a gun under his pillow. One night he heard a noise and pulled the gun out and fired and shot his big toe off. He said,"thank God I wasn't sleeping at the other end of the bed, otherwise I'd have blown me brains out!"
Murphy is driving a truck and it gets stuck under a bridge. A cop watches his efforts to extricate himself for a while then says, "are ye stuck?" Murphy says, "no, I was delivering the bridge and lost the address".
An American was driving near Galway in a huge Cadillac. He stopped when he saw a farmer and said, "how far to Galway?" The farmer said, "6 miles, but with a car like that you could do it in three!"
The doctor said to Murphy, "I can't find anything wrong with you; I'll have to put it down to the drink". Murphy said, "that's OK Doctor, I'll come back another time when you're sober".
There was a Scotsman in Dublin on his honeymoon - but he was alone. When asked where his wife was he said, "she's back in Scotland; she's been to Dublin before!"
There was a knock on the bedroom door and it was the hotel porter. He said, "what time did you want to be called? Was it 7 o'clock or 8 o'clock?"
Murphy said, "no, I wanted to be called at 9 o'clock. What time is it now?" The porter said "11 o'clock!"
This fella went to a furrier to buy a muff to keep his hands warm. The furrier said, "of course Sir, what fur?" He said, "I just told you - to keep me hands warm".
Murphy and his wife were in a lift and a gorgeous blonde got in with them. Murphy couldn't keep his eyes off her and his wife noticed this. When the lift doors opened the blonde smacked him across the face and said, "I don't like men who pinch my bottom". And she stalked off. Murphy said to his wife, "I swear I didn't pinch her bottom". His wife said, "I know you didn't; I did!"
Someone told Casey's wife that he chased women. She said, "let him chase them; it's the same as a dog chasing cars. The dog can't drive".
Murphy's wife was telling a friend that Murphy had dropped dead when he went out into the garden to cut a cabbage. She said, "my God, what did you do?" She said, "what could I do; I opened a can of peas!"
There was a knock on the door and there was a man there. He said to Casey's wife, "I'm collecting for the home for alcoholics, can you give me anything?" She said, "no, but if you come back at 5 me husband will be here and you can have him!"
The little Catholic boy said to the little Jewish boy, "our priest knows far more than your Rabbi". The little Jewish boy said, "of course he does, because you tell him everything!"
Did you hear about the Irish plumber? He was visiting Niagra Falls and said, "I think I can fix this!"
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, you obviously don't understand the situation.
O'Shaunessy had an epitaph on his tombstone. It read, "now do you believe I'm sick!"
A supermarket was burgled and 5000 cigarettes and 2 dozen lettuce were stolen. The Police are looking for a rabbit with a bad cough!
Murphy asked the barber how much for a haircut. The answer was 3 pounds. He said, "how much for a shave?" The answer was 1 pound. He said, "right, shave me head".
Murphy went shopping and said he would like to buy a few things. The assistant said "of course, Sir. Do you have a list?" He said, "no, I always stand this way!"
The Irish farmer was riding a donkey down the road and his poor wife was walking behind. When asked why he was riding and she was walking he said, "she hasn't got a donkey".
The porter took his bags, walked on ahead and said, "I'll be right behind you".
The Irishman in a pub was discussing religion and said "I'm an atheist - thank God!"
She said. "would you like today's paper or yesterday's paper?" He said, "I'd like today's". She said, "well, you'll have to come back tomorrow!"
Casey was walking down the road with his front door under his arm. Flanagan saw him and said, "why are you carrying the door?" Casey said, "I've lost the key!" Flanagan said, "well, you'd better not lose the door otherwise you won't be able to get in!" Casey said, "it's all right, I've left a window open!"
Uncle Pat reads the death notices every morning and can't understand why people die in alphabetical order!
The Scottish nephew buys a lovely gold watch from his uncle who is on his deathbed. He paid by cheque!
Murphy and Son quoted for the tunnel under the English Channel and the price was 500 pounds. When asked why he could build it so cheaply he said, " well there's just meself and the son so we cut out the middleman! Me son will go to France and start digging from that side and I'll dig from this side. And we'll meet in the middle". When asked what would happen if they failed to meet he said, "well, then you'll have 2 tunnels for the price of one!"
Henessey was about to take his 1st parachute jump. The instructor said "now I want you to go up in the plane and when you get to 6000 feet jump out. But seeing as it's your 1st jump don't pull the ripcord until you're 10 feet from the ground. This is so you won't have so far to fall if the parachute doesn't open!"
O'Shaunessy wanted to be buried at sea. 5 of the lads drowned digging the grave!
That's probably enough for one night!
Cheers,
Jim D and Gina

The lastest goss

The last few weeks have been a bit frustrating, mainly the waiting and not knowing when Jims business sorting will give us the bell to go.I have caught up with a few people in the mean time which has been great. met Pete Worsfold and Bonnie in whangarei 2 weeks ago and had a great catch up,hanging out in the coffee bar.Spent a great day in Auckland hanging out with Kagan all Saturday at the cafes in Kingsland.last weekend had lunch with Perry at the via Duct on Friday. Was great to see him for a couple of hours. Spent Friday night with Julian and Amy at Hillsbrough. It was a great night. Heather and Magan came over for dinner before they left for the farm.It was a nice evening,it took me back a few years to the time when Julian used to come up to Mangawhai with Jiveen and their friends for the holidays. Fond memories.A couple of weeks ago while having breakfast with Perrys girlfriend Tracie on a Sunday morning in Takapuna, We bumped into old friends of Jeans from Hongkong days what a reunion, for Jean.(Gina)Always great to see Tracie, who ran late due to Perry ringing her at early hours of the morning from Joburg. The funniest part of the weekend was stopping off to see Keith and Eileen  at Wellsford. After a cup of tea we stopped at the Wellsford pub with Keith and Eileen to take part in the Duck shooting raffle. Having to guess the amount of ducks in a bag. It was very amusing. Getting the boat organised this week, topping up on food, and stores in general as we want to be ready. Ho Ho.Ready is one thing we should be good at,its the going that we need practise at.Ok guys talk soon.

Marina fever

It's real - this marina fever!! But we are not succumbing!! Unfortunately we are still in Whangarei at the Town Basin and making regular trips to Auckland to hopefully finally (soon!) tie up matters arising since the passing of Jim's mother early in June. The fact that we are having to deal with the Guardian Trust who have been administering family estates since 1972 certainly isn't helping. The financial losses due to their incompetent management are such that it is better to try and forget them and just get sailing. For this and all sorts of other reasons we can't wait to leave and get out into the deep blue yonder. But we have to wait until the GT debacle is sorted and this shouldn't be more than 2 weeks now. However, we have mentioned 2 weeks before and here we still are!!
There has been a bright side though. On our trips to Auckland we have been catching up with Gina's family and have spent some time at Heather and Magan's new rural retreat between Tuakau and Port Waikato south of Auckland. They have recently acquired 14 miniature horses which are very pretty to look at but will require a good deal of looking after. We trimmed the fringe of one of the stallions the other day because the poor old chap couldn't see through his mane!
More good news - Jim's youngest daughter Charlotte is expecting their 2nd. child in December as is her school teacher sister, Rozanne! So, from having one grandchild, there will soon be 3!!! December will be quite a month. We'd better be back.
We have also acquired a new camera so, once we have worked out the technical challenges and complexities of transferring images to the computer, we will post some images to the blogsite. They say pictures speak more than a thousand words! It has underwater ability too so perhaps we will be able to show you some pictures of coral and colourful fish once we're where the butter melts.
We are about to install an electronic device (AIS) which picks up signals from any vessel over 300 tons (now mandatory for them to carry an AIS transmitter) and it tells you the name of the vessel, it's current position, course and speed - so we can work out when they will run us down!! Not really, we should be able to call them up on the radio and alert them to our position and get out of their way if necessary. No point in arguing the right of way when they are much bigger.
Apart from the above there isn't really any news of note - we'll let you know when we are leaving so you can all avidly follow our progress!!
Hope this finds everyone well.

Making a splash

Hi again,
Forgot to mention the memorable exit we made from Norsand when we launched last month. We were down the slipway and still sitting on the cradle when Kevin (the yardmaster) asked Gina to throw a bowline so they could turn us around once afloat. Meanwhile Jim was head down in the bilge checking for leaks as one does whenever one has been hauled out for a time. On emerging from the bilge he was bemused to see a dishevelled figure clinging to the side of the slipway. It slowly dawned on him that this was his soul/crew mate! Evidently on throwing the line she overbalanced and simply fell in as we had not replaced the lifelines at the bow - a legacy from having the access ladder there while sitting on the hard. At least there was a reasonable amount of water as we were almost afloat at the time and the only thing lost was a little pride!
But she is a real trooper and, although there were some very anxious people ashore, she came up smiling although the water just there is not the cleanest - to put it mildly! At least the local council hadn't dumped any raw sewerage into the river for some days. They've just spent some $18M on a new sports stadium but still haven't cleaned up the local sewerage problems which is a scandalous state of affairs. In the meantime they get very staunch about boaties doing that and in fact if one is caught making any such discharge in the marina one would be asked to leave immediately. Not that we would do that anyway, but it has happened apparently. There is a certain hypocrisy inherent in this position for sure.
Anyway, Kevin came out in the dinghy for some clean dry clothes and someone gave her a couple of dollars so she could have a shower! Meanwhile we came off the cradle and after checking the gearbox (which had been removed and then re-installed) we waited off the slipway until she was brought out in a dinghy.
All's well that ended well but it's not a place that you would choose to have a swim - that's for sure.
Cheers again,
J & G (J)

Marina bound

Hi everyone,
Well, we should have been 4-5 days out on the way to Vanuatu by now - we have been watching the Sailmail GRIB weatherfaxes and the window the boats left on last weekend has continued as long as they went westabout around a low that is lurking about between here and Vanuatu. They should have been having good sailing.
But, sadly we are still here as a result of the passing of Jim's mother 2 weeks ago at the grand age of 89 - 7 weeks short of her 90th. birthday. There is still quite a bit to do with all the legal issues that must be dealt with and the sad task of dealing with her possessions. However, we expect to be able to sail towards the end of July and all we have to do then is wait for another weather window. Let's hope they aren't as elusive then as they have been.
Anyway, at least all this didn't happen when we were halfway as turning back into what would be almost certainly headwinds would not have been a good option. And we are constantly tweaking and improving things on the boat so the time is being used usefully.
The downside is that we are probably getting too comfortable with a heater on the boat and the ability to walk ashore and have a meal or buy a bottle of wine for dinner whenever we feel like it!! We must get out of this decadent way of thinking before we venture out again!  Have to face the chick peas and black-eyed beans sometime!
The marina management often posts amusing and jocular  tracts on the inside of the loo doors for what is a captive audience! One that comes to mind is worthy of repetition here:
A woman was visiting a mental asylum and met the Director. She asked how it was determined that a person should be admitted. "Well", said the Director, "we fill a bathtub with water and give the person a spoon, a teacup and a bucket and then ask them to empty the bathtub". "Oh, I get it" said the woman, "a sane person would use the biggest item - the bucket ". "No", said the Director, "a sane person would pull the plug. Would you like a bed by the window?".
We hope this finds you all well and that life is treating you as you would wish.
Cheers,
Jim and Jean (Gina)

Fw:

Hi,
I have hesitated to inflict the attached on those of you who may be interested in reading all this, but it is typical of all that we have had to endure in our dealings in the Bay of Islands. Surely that can't be a coincidence. The other issue of course is that of our freezer which is still unresolved as a result of sloppy and incompetent construction at Partridge Yachts, Kerikeri. This has been corroborated by a refrigeration expert here in Whangarei.  In spite of it being taken out of the boat and sent back to them for re-building it still doesn't work satisfactorily and is using much more power to keep going than it should. Electric power consumption is of course of paramount concern when one's ability to generate power is so limited. The only way we are going to get the thing to work satisfactorily will be to have it rebuilt by people who know what they are doing - at great expense as usual.
So, you will see that getting a yacht ready for the high seas is not a minor excercise. It's taken 3 years and not a little frustration as well as expense as you can see to get to this point so now let's look forward to fair winds and temperatures where the butter melts!!
We're getting close now to leaving; yesterday for example we purchased almost the last of our food supplies and spent the rest of the day re-stowing most of the provisions already on board to improve the boat's trim. She is probably down an inch to an inch and a half from where she used to float but that's fairly normal for cruising boats.
Hopefully our next blog will be just before the great departure.
Cheers,
J & J (G)

This exchange of adversarial emails over what should have been able to be amicably settled just flabergasts me. In fact your reactions have been eerily akin to John Martin when we sacked him from managing the building of our house in Kerikeri. Maybe it's a Bay of Islands disease???

I find your adversarial attitude quite strange. Particularly when dealing with a customer who has expended a great deal of money with you. What difference would it make to the cost (or lack thereof) if you told me exactly what had been done to the pump? I've already thanked you for doing the work in a recent email  - the reason I hadn't done so before was because there was no advice to me as to what (if anything) had actually been done.

Hello Jim
Good news the water maker works as advertised. It may have simply had an air lock in the system from being out of the water and the system full of air. I have complete confidence you will be right and in a month or so you will be telling us what great people we are and you are so very happy with our water maker. The 60 liters per hour is a very conservative estimate of production as we would not want someone to call us liars as well as simply incompetent. If you want to know what we replaced in your pump you will have to pay for it or at least thank us for the free out of warranty service, but alas, I don't think you have it in you.
Stay safe on your trip

Terry,
I have just run the watermaker again and it seems to have settled down - i.e. no pressure fluctuations and doing all that it should. I cannot understand why it behaved as it did and now seems ok. I have done nothing differently.
It also seems to be making more product water than the claimed 60 litres per hour - is this any indication of a problem or should I be grateful?
I tasted a very small quantity but we are in the Town Basin and there was a sewage discharge here the other day so I am reluctant to test too extensively but it tasted ok.
I simply don't understand why it behaved so differently and it doesn't do much for confidence but perhaps it is a question of continuing to run it at various times and hope that it behaves consistently.
There's nothing more that I can say at the moment.
Jim Donald
P.S. Could you please tell me what parts were replaced in the pump - thanks

Jim.
We will have to see the system before we can properly evaluate the problem.
However if water is not getting to the high pressure pump it would cause the pressure to fluctuate wildly. The first thing we would do is start at the through hull fitting and trace the water flow to the panel. make sure water is getting there. If it is check that the water is then getting to the filter housing. ( press red button on top of filter housing and see if air and then water is coming out. If it is the pump should run properly.
We dismantled, checked, tuned and tested your pump and over pressure valve at our work shop and it was working perfectly when we shipped it back to you, ( over three hours and a few parts spent by us on a customers out of warranty pump at our expense).
I would of thought you would of thanked us for the free service but as usual you seem only capable of complaining.
Good luck on the investigation.

I think that the fact that the system still isn't working after we brought the boat to Opua TWICE earlier this year and also later removed the pump with great difficulty and sent it to you should indicate that it's about time you did something for us. Maybe not for nothing but surely there's a compromise somewhere.
Please tell me if the pump has a valve which shuts off if the system over pressurises for some reason. If it has then this may be the problem??
As for not being happy - you're correct in assuming I'm not happy at the moment but all it will take for that situation to reverse is to get the thing working reliably. I am easily pleased - that's all it will take!!!

It will be extremely inconvenient for us to bring the boat to Opua, but I suppose that if there was no alternative that's what we would have to do.
There is absolutely NO change to the system from when it was installed but I think that the problem is that you have no record of that (or any other) installation that you have done. All we have done is ensure that we can now check the oil!! And there has only been one other person working on the system apart from you and that was because we were on the hard and weren't prepared to pay a ridiculous amount to have you come to Whangarei. We removed the pump and sent it to you but it does seem that the pump is the problem. It may be simple to fix (i.e. a malfunctioning valve) so could you please tell me if there is such a valve. We are losing time while this is going on - all we want is to get the thing fixed.

I don't know what you did to it because there was no advice to that effect when it was returned. So, how would I know - hence the question??? I don't think I'm on a high horse - rather the opposite. All I am is a poor customer who has spent a great deal of money installing and then trying to get the thing working reliably before starting an offshore voyage. I would far rather have someone who supposedly knows what they're doing sort it out than have to be in a position of doing it myself with limited knowledge and equipment in an offshore environment. If that was necessary then so be it but otherwise it would be ludicrous if the solution can be arrived at here. The seacock is open, I've checked the filter - in fact it is brand new. I'm asking you for help because I'm not an engineer and have run out of ideas. Tell me, does the HP pump have some sort of limiting valve whereby it shuts down if the system over pressurises? This has been suggested here as a possibility if that valve was malfunctioning. As far as the boost pump is concerned, I've been told that there isn't one. If there is, can you tell me where it may be located and what does it look like?
And, as far as the warranty is concerned, it may have expired but not "years ago". The system was installed in 2007 - 3 years ago. And it's had very little use as the boat has been out of the water having further refit work done, a good deal of which has been necessitated by the incompetent work done at Kerikeri.
I think I may have found someone here in Whangarei who can look at the pump for me but it would help to have the answers to these questions.
Thank you
Jim Donald

Jim pleas re read this email as the first is ammended.
Good morning:
As far as the installation of the high pressure pump in the first place, sometimes you are limited in space and you make do with what you have.
As far as us insinuating that you are incompetant, are you suggesting we had your pump up here and DID NOTHING to it.
I suggest you come down off your high horse and work with us instead of insulting us and our products.
You say that it ran fine and then stopped working and no water was present at the filter. That means there is nothing wrong with the high pressure pump and there is no water getting through the system. IE dirty filter, closed seacocck, valve in wrong position,  or bad boost pump. Check to see if the boost pump is working properly. You have to use simple reasoning to work through the problem. If your solution is to cry for help and run down good products then God help you offshore.
I repeat, bring the boat to Opua and we will look at it. Our rates are $65.00 per hour as your warranty has expired years ago.
Have a nice day
